With the arrival of winter comes many wonderful things. Christmas and beautiful snow to name just two. But with the weather changing, also comes unsavory, and sometimes unsafe, conditions. Driveways in particular can become incredibly slippery, causing problems for you, your family, and your car. But what’s the best way to ensure your driveway stays slip-free this winter?
Invest In A Snow Blower
A snow blower is one of the most efficient strategies to keep your house’s walkway and driveway from becoming frozen, and thereby slip free! Although shoveling is one of the most effective ways to remove ice, it is a lengthy operation and can be hard on your back. Using a snow blower to remove the snow, and prevent ice, takes half the time.
Use An Eco-Friendly Deicer
Rock salt can be detrimental to the environment, your driveway, and small pets. Opt for an environmentally friendly deicer, such as Safe Paw, instead. This will melt the snow and ice, and keep your driveway slip free throughout the Winter!
Use Natural Aggregates For A Better Grip
You can try using sand, gravel, kitty litter, wood chips or straw on your driveway. Laying these items on your driveway during the winter months helps you to gain a better grip, both with your shoes and your car’s tires.
Preventative Care
Slippery driveways will often be caused by ice either inside of cracks or sitting on top of the surface. Sealer products will need to be applied to combat this. If you have a pored surface, meaning a surface with gaps in it (including cracks), then we recommend using a pregnator sealer. Pregnator sealers permeate the surface, getting deep into the surface gaps and creating a barrier to stop water from getting inside. Another method is to use a coating sealer; this will sit on top of the surface and act as a barrier from ice settling on top.
