While asphalt is a long-lasting, durable surface, it doesn’t last forever. While you can extend the life of your driveway, sidewalk or parking lot with patching and resurfacing, there will come a time when you’ll need to consider asphalt reconstruction in order to have a smooth, functional surface.
Asphalt patching just repairs surface damage, filling in cracks and potholes. While this can add years to the lifespan of your driveway, the patches are weak points that will eventually allow water to seep into your base. An asphalt resurface can further extend the life of your asphalt, but eventually, the base itself will need to be replaced. That’s where asphalt reconstruction comes in.
Over the years, weather and traffic reduces the ability of the asphalt to bond, creating a brittle surface highly susceptible to cracking and other damage. If the underlying gravel base is still structurally sound, the best option is to remove your existing asphalt, re-grade and shore up the base, and finally to install an entirely new asphalt surface on top.
If the base itself has been damaged, the entire foundation can be replaced, with a new sub-base installed before asphalt is laid over the top. This will ensure that your asphalt surface last the longest amount of time; it’s essentially a complete replacement of your entire surface.
