Ideally, your driveway should last anywhere from 10 to 20 years. Which is a long lifespan for something that is not only used on a daily basis, but is also exposed to elements such as snow, rain, oil, and heavy equipment. But oftentimes the driveway is overlooked until it is stained and cracked beyond repair. Make 2022 the year you prioritize your driveway’s maintenance. So you can keep it looking good this year, and the next!
Resolution 1: Prioritize Winter Driveway Maintenance
Driveways sustain the most damage during winter months. Asphalt turns brittle in winter, making it vulnerable to heavy car tires and hand-powered snowplows. While a metal shovel may help you remove snow efficiently, it can also easily damage the asphalt with its sharp edge. This year, choose a plastic shovel or a metal shovel with a rubber blade. It helps get the job done without etching marks or cracks in the asphalt. Alternatively, de-icers can be harsh on asphalt driveways. If you must use a de-icer, choose Magnesium Chloride or Calcium Magnesium Acetate.
Resolution 2: Sealcoat Your Driveway
Sealcoating is a rich, protective liquid that not only seals crevices and cracks, but can also help protect your driveway from heat and water. Sealcoating can be a DIY job, but bear in mind it generally takes at least two days as well as the proper preparation, tools, and supplies. Once your driveway has been sealcoated, you should repeat the process every three to five years.
Resolution 3: Regularly Clean Your Driveway
Just like the interior of your home, your driveway should be regularly cleaned to keep it at its best. Letting garbage, fuel, or even leaves pile up and accumulate on your asphalt can result in both permanent stains and damage. Sweeping debris, removing oil stains, and filling small cracks as soon as they appear will help your driveway maintain its integrity.
