Weeds are a common nuisance. They grow in our gardens, walkways, and even in the tiniest cracks of our driveways. So how can we prevent grass from growing in this area? In this article we will explore some home remedies that will leave your driveway weed-free!
Vinegar
Vinegar is great for removing unwanted grass because it is a natural herbicide. However it is very potent and will kill whatever it comes in contact with. It is important to not spray around plants you wish to keep. You can pour the vinegar in the affected area or make a mixture of one cup of salt, one gallon of white vinegar, and one cup of lemon juice for a more powerful concoction.
Seal The Cracks
Luckily weeds cannot grow where there is no space! Sealing the cracks in your driveway will prevent unwanted grass from growing in the future. First, clean any debris from the cracks, then fill them with mortar or masonry caulk. You can inspect your driveway annually and fill cracks at the first sign of damage.
Pour Boiling Water on Them
Just finished boiling pasta? Throw the leftover water on those pesky weeds! The hot water will effectively kill the weeds after several treatments. Just be sure not to throw water that has been in touch with meat or oils, which will attract bugs and other pests.
Commercial Herbicide
Chemicals should always be a last resort. However, there are several natural herbicides on the market today (or that you can make yourself!) that are healthier for your family and the environment. While a bit expensive, commercial herbicides are the best option for killing weeds and preventing new ones from growing.
Pre-preparation
Pre-preparation is the best way to prevent unwanted grass from growing. So if you are installing hardscape around your home, be sure to place a landscaping fabric or geotextile mesh before the installation. If you do notice weeds beginning to grow, make sure you remove them before they seed. This will prevent the weeds from spreading throughout other areas of your yard or hardscape.
