How to Redirect Water Runoff with Pavers

Water damages your foundation, landscaping, walkways, and more. How can you reduce water runoff with paver drainage? Avoid the damage caused by poorly designed yards with custom pavers. What do you need to know to avoid water runoff?

How Pavers Reduce Water Runoff

Can pavers reduce water runoff for your home? How does paver drainage work? The materials leave gaps to make the area much more porous. Pavers make the area look much more attractive while also reducing water runoff damage considerably. When you install pavers like a patio or walkway, you can alter the overall slope of your surface. This will help adjust water runoff away from your home.

Can I Install Pavers Myself?

If you are a capable DIY homeowner, installing pavers will be a long job, but doable. If you cannot install pavers, have time limitations, or physical limitations, calling a professional installer will save you time and hassle. This job involves a lot of lifting and digging, which means that you need to be in top physical health to complete the job yourself.

To install your own pavers, you need to outline the area with the water runoff using ground stakes. Dig the soil six inches deep plus the thickness of pavers. Add a couple of inches of gravel to space. Pack it down. Add another two inches of gravel on the side that needs to be higher.

You need to keep checking the slope. Ideally, you need a drop of half an inch for every four feet. Keep filling in and removing gravel as you go. Add two inches of sand once you are finished with altering the slope.

Now it’s time to place the pavers. Start at the beginning and work your way until the entire area is filled. Stagger rows, leaving a small gap between pavers. Edge the pavers with metal landscape edging. Add sand to the surface and sweep it across to fill in the cracks. Hose it all down. Check the water. It should be sloping away from your home.
