Asphalt Driveway Paving 101

Asphalt Driveway Installation 101

You may be an avid DIY-er, or perhaps you’re just curious. Whatever the case, learning about the process of asphalt paving is still pretty cool! So grab your notebook and pen – Asphalt Driveway Installation 101 is in session.

What Is Asphalt?

Asphalt is a combination of gravel, sand, crushed rock, and slags. These materials are bound together by a material called bitumen. Once the ingredients have been mixed, they are then baked to create the final asphalt product. Fun Fact: did you know asphalt is almost 100% recycled? Asphalt is also porous, allowing water to move into the ground rather than runoff.

Paving A New Driveway

  • If you are installing a new driveway, the existing surface must first be removed. Once that is done, the area must be graded to ensure water will not sit on the surface of the new driveway.
  • After grading, a supporting layer called sub-base is laid down. This layer assists in load-bearing, and is mostly made of crushed stones. If you are installing a new driveway on top of an existing one, it is imperative to lay a new sub-base for structural integrity.
  • A binder layer made of bitumen and oil is then laid down, followed by a proof roll on top. This proof roll detects any soft areas that may need more sub base added to it.
  • Once all your soft spots have been filled, it’s time for the new asphalt to be put in place! Asphalt is dumped and then rolled smooth, which helps to compact the material. Once the asphalt cools, it is ready for action!

But wait – there’s more! It is still wise to wait at least 24 hours before driving on your new driveway, and the asphalt must be cured between 30 (commercial) and 90 (residential) days to stop oxidation. Asphalt will eventually need to be resurfaced, but the good news is you can do it yourself using a driveway sealant!

Choose The Right Paving Company

How To Choose The Right Paving Company

Deciding to pave your driveway is a no-brainer. A paved driveway boosts the value of your property and provides a safe area to park and play. Choosing the best contractor for the job, however, can be more of a challenge. When done properly, a paving job should last for decades! But – hiring the wrong company means you may spend a lot of money for work that will need to be repaired soon after. To help you make the right decision, we’ve put together this list of how to choose the right paving company!

Good Reputation

A reputable paving company knows that knowledge and experience are paramount. Choose a company that has invested time and effort into cultivating a good reputation. Look into how many years they have been in business, and how that business has been received.

Experience and References

Has this company worked on similar projects before? If your project involves a large area for commercial paving, then choosing a company who has mainly completed small residential projects may not be the best choice. It is also important to look at references from previous clients, or if possible, take a look at recent projects completed in the area.

Insured and Licensed

This is by far the most important quality to look for in a paving company! Paving can be a dangerous job. Without the proper insurance, accidents will end up on your homeowners policy. A professional company will have invested money to procure a policy with full liability. The paving company should also be licensed to perform work in your local area.

Transparent Communication

Transparent and timely communication is essential! The right company will be customer focused. They will respond to your inquiry in a timely manner. They will take the time to perform a site visit before providing a clear estimate. Discussing the job preparation, drainage requirements, and asphalt thickness are all conversations that should be had before agreeing to work together.

By looking out for these 4 things, you can be confident in your decision to hire the best paving company for the job! If you have an upcoming paving project and would like to receive an estimate, contact our qualified team of professionals today at 416-701-1881 or info@epicpaving.ca.

when is it time to replace your asphalt driveway

Top Repair Tips for Asphalt Driveways

You love your durable asphalt driveway! But no material is immune to the wear and tear from weather, daily use, and perhaps even improper maintenance. Asphalt driveway repairs are inevitable, and in the article we will give you some tips on how you can perform some of those repairs yourself. These are our top repair tips for asphalt driveways!

CHECK THE WEATHER FIRST

Notice damage in the winter? Add repairs to your to-do list for the spring! Repairs should only be performed on days with hot, dry weather. Rainfall will prevent sealing, and cooler temperatures will prevent a good bond from forming.

WORK WITH A CLEAN SURFACE

Before beginning any sort of maintenance, make sure the surface of your asphalt driveway is clean. Sweep the area to remove any loose gravel or asphalt, and spray lightly with a hose to get rid of any particles the broom may have missed.

DETERMINE THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE

The size of the crack will determine what sort of product you will need to use to repair it. Crack-filler is applied with a caulking gun, and is perfect for cracks under a 1/2″ wide. Wider cracks should be filled using asphalt cold patch products, and deep cracks or holes should be filled with sand or gravel to ensure a better repair.

SEAL OFF THE AREA

Whether you are repairing a crack or patching a hole, you will need to apply a sealer to the area afterwards. Our experts recommend applying at least two coats of a good quality sealer to truly ensure a good bond, and prevent moisture from entering the area.

BONUS TIP: TAMP, TAMP, TAMP

Don’t forget to tamp down on the asphalt patch at least twice during the filling process. Tamping uses pressure to eliminate air bubbles and form a tighter bond. You can use a 4×4, tamping tool, or even your car.
